“Your time in Thailand you will get out what you put into it. I am thankful for my relationships with my students and they are one of the biggest things I got out of my time teaching.
My time in Thailand helped set me up for success in my current role. Living and working in a small rural part of Thailand meant I adapted to life in Asia more quickly. I became fluent in body language and hand gestures when speaking with locals. Currently I am a primary caretaker for Sun Bear cubs in Borneo. I am in an even more rural part of the world but I felt prepared coming from Phusang. My schedule and my resources have constantly fluctuated here in Indonesia but teaching in a Thai school helped me learn to embrace adaptability and flexibility. Forming relationships with my students helped me learn that bonds could be formed regardless of languages, and I have connected with many of the local staff here and we speak very little of each other’s language.”

“I originally joined the Teach in Thailand program with the intention of only staying 6 months. That 6 months quickly changed into a year and that year became another. What was supposed to be a 6-month experience, turned into an almost 2-year adventure. No words, in any language, could accurately express how much I loved teaching in Thailand. It was the most challenging thing I have yet to do with my life, but also the most rewarding by far. It certainly had its ups and downs, but I think that is the beauty of an experience like this. It offers you an unfiltered look at not only a new culture, but also yourself. The challenges I faced in Thailand pushed me and forced me to learn more about myself than I ever thought possible. The things you learn in an experience like this are invaluable to you whether you would like to continue teaching or not. I will always be grateful to the Teach in Thailand program and to OEG—for the experience, for the culture, for the growth, and most importantly for some of the best friends I will ever have. If you treat this experience with the care, hard work, and respect it deserves, I promise you will not be disappointed. So, get out there and see what the world has to offer!”

Before I came to New Zealand, I was anxious about everything. Will I make new friends here? Will I enjoy this summer trip? Everything turned out great and I made many new friends. At Marcellin College, everything was very different from Thailand because the way they learn was different from my school but everyone was very nice and kind.

This program had polished myself into a defined and responsible young adult. From an introverted and inexpressive kid, exposure to a foreign environment circumstantially allowed me to become more expressive and take more initiatives in pursuing my goals. Had I not participated in this program, my life and career path would have been undeniably different”
